Small Changes

• Use an advanced power strip or “smart” power bar instead of individual outlets.
   
• Combine fans and air conditioners to further reduce your energy bills. This can reduce your air conditioning costs by 14 percent.
   
• Unplug chargers when they are not in use.  Just one charger won’t make much impact but, collectively, plugged-in chargers can make up 10% of your energy bill.

Bigger Changes

• Ensure your appliances and electronics are ENERGY STAR® certified. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ensures that each Energy Star product is up to government standard and will perform as efficiently as possible. 
   
• For appliances like washers/ dryers look for the “ENERGUIDE” symbol on the appliance.

Biggest Changes

• Add Insulation to Your Attic: As hot air rises most heat escapes from your attic. Adding insulation will keep the warm air in and the cool air out. The average cost to adding insulation to your attic is $1,356 which will quickly pay for itself with the money saved on heating bills.  
   
• Solar Panels: Solar panels are a bit more of an investment but they are worth adding to your plan. You will reap the rewards instantly with solar panels. They will save you money on your electricity bill plus they may qualify for tax rebates. 
   
• Replace Windows: Windows are often the culprit for draughts and heat loss in a home. By replacing windows with energy efficient or ENERGY STAR windows you will start to save immediately. If your windows don’t need to be replaced but are still draughty, consider sealing/ weather-stripping them.
